Does SAMe Work?

That is what I am going to find out. I started taking SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) on May 18th. I have been experiencing mild anxiety attacks and mild depression over the past year, so my wife and I decided I needed to do something about it. I made an appointment with my doctor and had planned on walking out of his office with a prescription for some sort of anti-depressant. My mother had heard of SAMe, which is natural and not only used for depression, but also osteoarthritis and liver disease. I am supposed to see a “change” in 7-14 days. As of now, I haven’t seen a whole lot of difference. But I’ll give it some time.
I chose to try SAMe because it is natural and I’ve heard some bad things about prescription anti-depressants. I’m not saying all prescription anti-depressants are bad for you. I’m just saying I’d rather choose the natural route first. And if that doesn’t work, well then, I’ll make another appointment to see the doctor and see if he can help me.
I’ll keep updates on how the SAMe is working.
I’ll tell you a little about myself, so that you can see the type of person who is writing this. I’m 42 (turning 43 next month), married for seven years in July and a father of a three year-old boy and a one year-old girl. I was also let go from my job last month. I work out three times a week (30 minutes, high intensity weight training), I eat well, don’t drink and get 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep.
Within that, you can probably see some of the factors triggering my current state of mental health: coming into my 40’s, dealing with the “terrible three’s”, and wondering where my next paycheck will come from. The one-year old daughter? She’s not so bad. She sleeps through the night.
Now, even though that might not sound like a lot to you, it seems to have pushed me to my limits. I know I should be “bucking up” and handle it like a man, but it’s been a rough year for us and I’m trying to find a solution. This website is one of my ways of not only dealing with my personal problems, but hopefully helping others deal with theirs.
Please, let me know if you’ve taken SAMe or if you are currently taking it, and tell me your results.
